Restaurants in Queenstown, and the List Behind Each One

Four sources qualified a venue for this page: the Cuisine Good Food Guide 2026, the LION Hospitality New Zealand Awards for Excellence 2026, the Brewers Guild of New Zealand's beer awards, and the Bakels New Zealand Supreme Pie Awards. A venue's own website was used only for hard facts once something else had already qualified it: an address, an opening time, a published price, a stated rule. No blog, no aggregator, no review platform and no travel listicle was used at any point, which is why several restaurants you will see at the top of every other Queenstown page are not here.

The names left out, in full, are Fergbaker, Ferg's Bar, Mrs Ferg, Fergbutcher, Vudu Cafe and Larder, Yonder, Bespoke Kitchen, Blue Kanu, Eichardt's, The Rees, Provisions of Arrowtown, Captains Restaurant, Halo and Public Kitchen. Not one of them is bad, and several are excellent by every account. They are absent because no published list we accept carries them, and saying so is more useful than quietly dropping them.

One exclusion is worth its own line. Captains Restaurant displays a Beef and Lamb New Zealand Excellence Award badge on its own website. That programme no longer exists as a searchable register: the awards page returns a 404 and the Beef and Lamb awards hub now lists only farming awards. A badge on a venue's own site is a claim, not a citable list, so the claim was checked and rejected on exactly that ground.

The one exception, labelled as one

Fergburger has a card, and it is the only venue here that qualifies for nothing. Every dataset was checked and it appears in none of them. It stays because a Queenstown eating page that omits the most-searched food name in town is being clever rather than useful, and because its own site does publish two facts worth having: 42 Shotover Street, and open every day from 7am to 2.30am.

Its card says all of this on the card itself.

The first is the one that matters medically. Coeliac New Zealand runs the Dining Out Programme, which it describes as an independent endorsement that gluten-free food is produced and served safely with trained staff. Its public dining guide lists a handful of venues nationwide, and not one of them is in Queenstown, Arrowtown or Gibbston. No Queenstown venue can honestly be called gluten-free certified.

Coeliac New Zealand's own site notes only that a third-party app will be launching in Queenstown soon, which is not an accreditation. If you are coeliac rather than avoiding gluten by preference, that changes how you ask at a door here.

• No award-winning bakery or pie. Every Bakels Supreme Pie Awards top ten from 2023 to 2026 was checked; the only Otago winner in the 2026 results is Kai Pai at 123 Ardmore Street in Wanaka, and there are zero Queenstown addresses
• No award-listed coffee roaster. No Queenstown entrant appears on the barista championship lists and no Queenstown Roaster of the Year was found. The coffee entry here is a cafe, Odd Saint, and the card says so
• No listed vegetarian or vegan venue. None appears on any list we accept. The closest honest line is Sherwood's own figure of over 40% of its green produce grown in its kitchen garden, which makes it vegetable-forward, not vegetarian

What to do with an absence

Absences are not verdicts on the food. Fergbaker sells a great deal of bread and is on no list; that says something about which awards Queenstown businesses enter, not about the bread. What an absence does tell you is that nobody independent has checked, which matters enormously for the coeliac question and hardly at all for whether a pie is nice.

The practical move in each case is the same: ask the venue directly and take its answer as the venue's own claim, exactly as this page treats a self-awarded badge. For gluten-free specifically, ask about the fryer and the prep surface rather than the menu symbol, because the symbol is the kitchen's own and no programme is standing behind it in this town.

Hats are awarded annually and count upward: one hat, two hats, three hats, with a score out of 20 attached to the top rooms. Essence is the only three-hat restaurant in the South Island in the 2026 guide, at 19.5. Below it the two-hat tier is where the value sits, because a two-hat kitchen in this town charges roughly what a good city bistro does while cooking to a graded standard.

Why the two missing hats are the useful part

Amisfield and Rātā are the two names most likely to be recommended to you as Queenstown's best, and both hold no 2026 hat. The guide's own note explains it: the restaurant changed chefs during the assessment period, so it could not be considered for a hat, and it was retained as a Destination because it has been highly regarded in the past. That is not a demotion for cooking badly. It is a gap in the assessment, and both may regain a hat in the next guide.

The reason to print it anyway is that a page which calls them hatted is copying last year's guide without checking. If a hat is what you are buying, the eight rooms above are the ones currently holding one. If a reputation is what you are buying, Amisfield's fixed evening menu at $286.20 (NZ$490) per person is still the most talked-about table in the district, and staying near Lake Hayes or Arrowtown shortens the drive home from it.

Four of the thirteen venues here publish no opening hours at all: Essence, which says only that it is open in the evenings; Odd Saint, the country's Best Cafe, which publishes none on its own pages; Little Blackwood, which publishes bookings-office hours of 9am to 5pm and a note that food starts at 4pm; and Canyon Brewing, which opens seven days from 11am and never says when it closes. Two more publish hours that contradict themselves between pages: Aosta on whether brunch ends at 3pm or 2.30pm, and Fino on whether Monday starts at noon or 4pm.

The rules that are published are worth knowing because they are unusual. Altitude Brewing takes no bookings at all, stating that it is a first-come first-served tap room, and it opens on public holidays with no surcharge, which is rare enough in New Zealand to be a selling point. Little Blackwood applies a 15% surcharge on all public holidays. Mora states that bookings are essential. Nobody else publishes a booking rule either way.

One transport fact is published and useful: Mora at Lake Hayes states that it has a bus stop right outside its gates with a frequent timetable, which makes it the one out-of-town restaurant on this page you can reach on a $1.46 (NZ$2.50) Bee Card fare. Aosta in Arrowtown is 25 scheduled minutes from Stanley Street on Orbus route 4. The rest of the routes and fares are on getting around Queenstown.

Eating well without a hat bill

The cheapest published sit-down food in this list is a brewery. Canyon's woodfired pizzas are $18.69 (NZ$32) and its flatbread $10.51 (NZ$18); Little Blackwood's share plates start at $8.18 (NZ$14). Neither brewery publishes a beer price, which is the single most-requested figure on this page and the one nobody in Queenstown puts online.

Below that, the honest answer is that no cheap eat in this town is on a published list. The Bakels pie awards have no Queenstown address in four years of top tens, and Fergburger publishes no prices. If a budget rather than a hat is the constraint, free things to do in Queenstown and the cost of a Queenstown trip are the pages that do the arithmetic.

Fergburger's website is a single page. It contains no occurrence of the words queue, wait or line, publishes no wait time, and offers no order-ahead or ticketing claim of any kind. So this page prints no wait time either, because any minute figure would be invented or copied from somebody who invented it. What the site does publish is worth the visit on its own terms: 42 Shotover Street, open every day from 7am to 2.30am, which is nineteen and a half hours a day and the widest published trading window of any venue on this page.

The same owner's other addresses are published in the same place, and none of them is on a citable list either: Fergbaker at 40 Shotover Street, 6am to 2am; Ferg's Bar at 44 Shotover Street, 7am to 1am; Mrs Ferg Gelateria at 40 Shotover Street and 69 Beach Street; and Fergbutcher at 7 Bush Creek Road in Arrowtown, 7am to 6pm. Fergbutcher's site describes award-winning sausages without naming an award, which is precisely the kind of claim this page does not repeat.

If the queue is the thing you are worried about, the published hours are your lever rather than a wait estimate: a venue trading until 2.30am is not a venue with only one busy hour. And thirty seconds up the same street, Toast and Oak holds two hats and opens for snacks at 4pm.
