The archive snapped the request to a grid point at 45.026363 S, 168.68013 E, elevation 322 m, and returned data in Pacific/Auckland local time. High and low are the means of daily maximum and minimum 2 m air temperature; rain is the mean of thirty annual monthly totals; a rain day is one with at least 1.0 mm.

Where These Figures Come From, and What They Are Not
Every number above is reproducible. The call that produces it, the grid point it lands on and the period it covers are all printed here, because a monthly average with no method behind it is a decoration.
The series is ERA5, the European Centre for Medium-Range Weather Forecasts reanalysis, pulled through the Open-Meteo historical archive API. The request asks for daily maximum and minimum 2 m air temperature and daily precipitation totals for 45.0312 S, 168.6626 E, from 1995-01-01 to 2024-12-31, in the Pacific/Auckland time zone. The archive answers on its own grid, which put the request at 45.026363 S, 168.68013 E, elevation 322 m.
Queenstown town sits at roughly 310 m and Queenstown Airport at about 355 m, so the grid cell is a reasonable stand-in for the valley floor while smoothing away the 2,000 m peaks that ring it. Thirty complete years is the standard climatological period, and using complete years means no month is weighted by a partial season.
What we could not get, and why it matters
These are not New Zealand's official climate normals, and this page does not pretend they are. NIWA, now Earth Sciences New Zealand, publishes 1991 to 2020 station normals through its CliFlo national climate database and its DataHub rather than as a per-town web page, and no Queenstown station normals table could be retrieved on the day this page was checked. That means two things.
First, the figures above are a reanalysis product, not gauge readings from an instrument in the Wakatipu basin. Second, and more usefully, no ERA5-versus-NIWA comparison can be reported yet, so anyone telling you that Queenstown's official average July high is one specific number should be asked which station and which period. The citable narrative source for the region is NIWA's own regional volume, The Climate and Weather of Otago.

Three things nobody publishes for Queenstown
Humidity, sunshine hours and snowfall days are all missing from any official per-town series we could cite. ERA5 gives temperature and precipitation cleanly; humidity is available but not as a normal anyone has published for this town, sunshine hours are a NIWA station product behind CliFlo, and snowfall is not broken out at all. Destination Queenstown's own line about winter is the closest thing to an official statement on snow at street level, and it is a negative one: snow rarely makes its way to ground level in the town.
That is worth more than a fabricated snow-days column, because it tells a visitor what to expect from a winter street rather than from a mountain.
The Same Town, Two Different Tables
If the numbers here do not match the ones on the last Queenstown weather page you read, the difference is real and it is explainable. Two widely used sources disagree with this one in opposite directions, and the reasons are period, method and altitude.
The comparison below sets our ERA5 grid-cell figures against the Queenstown Aerodrome station summary published by timeanddate.com, which is built from weather reports collected in the ten years 2012 to 2021 for a station about 6 km from town, and against the seasonal ranges Destination Queenstown prints on its own seasons page. Nobody here is wrong. A reanalysis grid cell that includes rising ground reads wetter and, in winter, colder than an airport gauge on the valley floor; a ten-year window catches a warmer decade than a thirty-year one; and a tourism board quotes the range a visitor might feel across a day, not a monthly mean, which is why its winter figure of -4°C to 8°C brackets our 0.0°C night and 4.4°C day rather than contradicting them.

Which one should you plan with?
For deciding what to pack and how likely a wet afternoon is, use the shape rather than the absolute number, and the shape is the same in both tables: no dry season, a rainfall floor in mid-winter, and a wet spring. For deciding whether a specific activity will run, neither table helps at all, because operators make that call on the morning from live conditions. If you want a single number for a suitcase, take the ERA5 average high for your month, subtract a couple of degrees for the wind that crosses the lake most afternoons, and pack for it.

Four Seasons in a Day Is a Description, Not a Joke
Tourism New Zealand puts it in its own words: locals like to joke that you can experience four seasons in one day. In the Wakatipu basin the joke has a mechanism behind it. Queenstown sits in a deep glacial trough at the foot of a 2,000 m range, roughly 180 km from the Tasman Sea in one direction and the Southern Ocean in the other, and weather systems arriving from the west have to climb the Southern Alps to reach it.
That produces a pattern the monthly averages flatten completely: a still, frosty morning, cloud building against the Remarkables by late morning, an afternoon northwesterly funnelling down the lake, and a clear cold evening. A November day can hold 20°C sun and 6°C rain within four hours, which is why the layer that matters here is a windproof shell rather than a heavy coat, in any month. The practical consequence is not about clothing, though.
It is about sequencing: put the weather-critical booking, the flight, the skydive, the paraglide, on the first morning of the trip, and leave the things that run in anything, the lake cruise or the jet boat, as the fallback.
Town at 310 Metres, the Tops a Kilometre Higher
The single biggest limitation of this page is that it describes one elevation. Queenstown town sits at about 310 m; the ERA5 grid cell is at 322 m; Coronet Peak's summit is 1,649 m, Ben Lomond's 1,748 m, and the Remarkables ski area is a 24 km drive that climbs most of a vertical kilometre. Air cools with height at roughly 6.5°C per 1,000 m in moist conditions, so a 15°C November afternoon in town is close to freezing on the Ben Lomond ridge, which is exactly what the Department of Conservation means when it warns of snow and ice above the bushline from April to November and says hypothermia is a real risk even in summer.
The same gap explains the two things visitors find contradictory in winter: it can rain in town while it snows on the mountain, and the ski fields can be closed for wind on a day the lakefront is calm. NZSki publishes a snow report updated daily by 06:30 that carries road status, chain requirements and car park space; that report, not the town forecast, is the document a ski day is planned from. The same applies in reverse to the fiords, where the Milford road crosses the Divide at 532 m and the Homer Tunnel sits at 945 m, so a wet day in Queenstown can be a snow day at the tunnel between May and September.
Frost, Inversions and the Winter Morning
The mean daily minimum in July is 0.0°C, which is the single most misleading number on this page, because a mean of zero means roughly half the July nights fall below it. Central Otago valley frosts are severe and they are the reason a Queenstown winter feels colder than a European city at the same temperature reading: the air is dry, still and settles into the basin overnight. A clear winter morning here often produces an inversion, cold dense air trapped on the lake with warmer air above it, so the temperature at the top of the gondola can be several degrees higher than at the lakefront and the sun reaches Bob's Peak long before it reaches the town.
That is a genuine planning fact, not a curiosity: on an inversion morning the view from height is above a layer of fog and the town below is grey. It also has a hard edge. Frost on a footpath and black ice on the access roads are the winter hazards that actually reach visitors, and there is no council gritting schedule for pedestrians to consult; the roads authority prioritises the arterial routes, including the Crown Range, which is maintained open and gritted when necessary between 07:00 and 22:00.
In June, July and August, expect to scrape a hire car, and expect the shady side of a street to stay frozen all day.
Ninety-Three to 141 Millimetres a Month, and What That Actually Means
The most unusual thing about Queenstown's rainfall is not how much falls but how little the amount changes. The gap between the wettest and driest month is 48 mm, which for a temperate climate is remarkably flat.
New Zealand's national tourism body describes the country's rainfall as high and spread evenly through the year, and Queenstown is a clean example. September's 141 mm and October's 138 mm are the peaks; July and August share the floor at 93 mm. There is no monsoon, no dry season and no month in which a rain jacket is optional.
What does change is frequency: October averages 15.3 days with at least a millimetre of rain and December 15.2, against 10.3 in February. A February shower is more likely to be a heavy afternoon burst; an October one is more likely to be a grey day. For a five-day trip in October, the arithmetic is that two of your five days will probably carry measurable rain, and the correct response is to hold one flexible slot rather than to book an indoor week.
How many days in Queenstown is enough is partly a rainfall question rather than a sightseeing one: three days will show you the town, but five gives the weather somewhere to go wrong, and the three-day itinerary shows what a lost day actually costs.
November, the month people ask about most
November averages 15.0°C by day and 6.7°C at night with 123 mm across 14.1 rain days, which reads worse than it feels. It has the longest usable daylight of any month outside December and January because New Zealand is on summer time, the Routeburn returns to Great Walk status on the first of the month, and rates are still shoulder-season. The catch is variability rather than volume: November is the month most likely to hand you a 20°C afternoon and a snow shower on the tops in the same week.
Pack as if for two seasons and treat any fixed alpine plan as provisional.
Does the rain matter to the fiords?
Less than anywhere else in the district, and arguably not at all. Fiordland's cruise operator answers the question directly on its own FAQ, and the answer is that the rainfall is what makes the region a place of lakes, rivers, waterfalls and fiords, and visitors should expect and be equipped for some of it. The practical version is that Milford's temporary waterfalls only run while it is raining, so the wet-day version of that cruise is the better photograph.

What Weather Actually Cancels
Four Queenstown operators publish what happens when the weather turns, and their terms are more specific than any forecast. Prices on this site are US dollars first with the New Zealand figure in brackets, at NZ$1 = $0.584, the European Central Bank reference rate.
The four are AJ Hackett Bungy, Shotover Jet, NZONE Skydive and RealNZ, and the pattern across all of them is the same and worth stating before the table: none of them publishes a numeric threshold. No wind speed, no rainfall figure, no cloud base. The decision is made by the crew on the morning against live conditions, which means the only thing a visitor can control is having somewhere to move the booking to.
That is why every one of these operators, unprompted, tells you to book early in your trip.

The clause that catches people out
A weather cancellation by the operator and a cancellation by you are two completely different transactions, and only the first is generous. RealNZ's general terms grant a refund only where it receives notice at least 24 hours before departure, with 48 hours on Milford Sound Business Class and 14 days on the overnight cruises; a customer who wakes up, sees rain and decides not to go is inside none of those windows. The corollary is that looking at a forecast the night before and cancelling yourself is the single most expensive thing you can do with a Queenstown booking.
Let the operator make the call. If they run, the day is fine; if they do not, you are rebooked or refunded.
The one weather event that closes a road
State Highway 94 into Milford is the only piece of Queenstown's day-trip infrastructure that shuts for weather without notice, and it does so on a schedule of its own: the avalanche season runs June to October across a 17 km stretch, chains may be required from June to November, and the Milford Road Alliance closes the road to bring avalanches down with explosives before they fall unprompted. The Department of Conservation's advice to anyone unsure about winter driving is to take a bus, which also transfers the weather risk to an operator whose terms are printed above.
What to Pack, by Month
Four packing profiles rather than twelve, because the months group cleanly and the constant across all of them is a windproof shell.
The sun is the item most visitors under-pack for. Tourism New Zealand's SunSmart advice singles out September to April, and 10:00 to 16:00 within it, as the window in which unprotected skin burns quickly here, because there is comparatively little air pollution and less ozone overhead. That applies on cloudy days and it applies on a ski field in September, where the reflection doubles it.

Does it snow in Queenstown town?
Rarely at street level. Destination Queenstown's own wording is that snow rarely makes its way to ground level, and no official snow-days series is published for the town. The snow that visitors come for sits above about 1,200 m on the four ski fields, which is a 16 to 24 km drive and most of a vertical kilometre from the lakefront. Are these figures in Celsius or Fahrenheit?
Celsius, as measured, with the Fahrenheit equivalent in brackets beside every temperature. New Zealand uses Celsius everywhere, so the forecast on a hire-car radio, a ski report and an operator's own page will all be in Celsius; the Fahrenheit column here is a rounded conversion of the Celsius mean and not a separate measurement. Rainfall is in millimetres for the same reason.
How humid does Queenstown get?
No official monthly humidity series for Queenstown could be cited. NIWA publishes its station data through the CliFlo database rather than as a per-town page, and the ERA5 extract behind this table covers temperature and precipitation only. Third-party summaries of Queenstown Aerodrome reports put the annual mean near 69%, rising through the winter, but that is a commercial summary of station reports rather than a published normal, so we print it as context and not as a figure to plan by.
Do these numbers apply to Milford Sound or Wanaka?
No. This table is one grid point at 322 m in the Wakatipu basin. Fiordland is far wetter, and its main cruise operator publishes its own seasonal bands of 19 to 23°C in summer and 5 to 9°C in winter for the region; the Milford Sound page covers the road and the day. Wanaka sits over the Crown Range in a drier basin and is not described by these figures either.

Because an app shows a forecast for a point and this is a thirty-year mean for a grid cell, and because the underlying records differ.
